How Can I Be Sure My Food Is Grown Organically?
Organic Certification Agencies are groups which exist for the purpose of checking out farms and factories to make sure that they are in fact growing and processing things according to organic standards. They do site visits, talk with the producer about their methods, do soil tests, demand buffer strips, establish a paper trail that tracks the product from field to retail outlet or to consumer. On a label of a certified organic product, you should be able to find the name of the certifier. Links to a few of the common organic certification agencies in Saskatchewan, and some of the bigger ones globally are listed below. If a certification agency has not done an inspection and approved and licensed the farm, the producer cannot call the food Certified Organic. If you want to be sure, ask who the certifier was, and then contact them to confirm that the producer is indeed certified and not just trying to sell you something with a lie.
